What does a band need to say something? This weekend the Blue Room offers three answers. Friday opens with a voice raised in church and seasoned at Carnegie Hall, then hands the night to a band that says everything without a single word. Saturday, the voice comes roaring back. And Monday, August goes out the way every good Kansas City month should — with an open bandstand.

Indigo Hour: Delynia Jannell — Friday at 5:30 pm
Delynia Jannell has been singing since she was two years old, starting on the church pews of Bethel Church of God in Christ in Kansas City, Kansas. The stages that followed tell the story: featured soloist at Carnegie Hall, background vocals for Shania Twain, Tech N9ne, Krizz Kaliko, and E-40, and residencies across Kansas City today. Her range runs gospel to opera, but the foundation — where music and faith are the same thing — has never left her voice.

The Tribe — Friday at 8:30 & 10 pm
The Tribe doesn’t have a singer, and about two songs in you’ll understand why they don’t need one. Kansas City’s premier instrumental fusion band bends jazz, funk, R&B, and soul into one continuous groove — a sound so big audiences never quite believe there’s no vocalist up there. When they headlined the Blue Room this past February, the room asked them back before the second set was over.

Sir James Atwood — Saturday at 8:30 & 10 pm
Some debuts you don’t forget. When Sir James Atwood made his first Blue Room appearance at Indigo Hour this June, the room knew before the second song that a happy-hour set wasn’t going to be enough. Saturday night the Kansas City vocalist returns for the full treatment: two headline sets of jazz standards and soul grooves, delivered with the gala-stage power that opened ArtFusion KC at the Convention Center.

Monday Night Jam Session — Monday at 7 pm
Close out your August in the room where Kansas City jazz starts. The featured set kicks off at 7 pm, then the bandstand belongs to whoever brought their horn, their sticks, or their voice. $10 general public; free for AJM members, musicians, and students.
